By: Martin Banks. The Parliament.com  On: 09-02-2013 13:58  (12786 Reads)
INDUSTRY NEWS

British MEP Linda McAvan has called for increased awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide, warning it is a "bigger killer" than Aids and skin cancer.

Her demand comes after 23 people were taken to hospital after they became unwell at a Catholic youth movement meeting in Antwerp at the weekend. They were treated for the effects of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning which is thought to have escaped from the heating system into the hall.

The Second UK Dash for Gas

- A Faustian Bargain
By: Automatic Earth  On: 26-12-2012 13:04  (12325 Reads)
INDUSTRY NEWS
The UK is set to embark on its second dash for gas. The first, beginning in the early 1990s, occurred when gas was first permitted to be used for power generation. Prior to that it had been considered a premium fuel too valuable to be used in this way. The regulatory change initiated a substantial building programme for combined cycle gas plants, fuelled by North Sea gas. Very quickly gas generation became a major component of baseload in the UK, despite warnings that North Sea gas was a temporary bonus and its depletion would leave a structural dependency on Russian gas.

Reply to HVP article - Action against the Silent Killer

OPGO NEWS

Members of OPGO have read the article "Action against the silent killer" in HVP November/December edition and wondered where the author has gained his knowledge of our industry.

When he says "some are already demonstrating good practice by not signing off service work until a carbon monoxide alarm has been fitted" we think that is misleading and has no basis in the regulations that control the gas industry. Fortunately our industry is run by people who follow common sense, not some political agenda (however well intentioned) and we like to deal in facts not fiction.

Chairman's Opinion:-

As a working gas service engineer I am always amazed at the arbitrary way spares are priced.

Gas victim reconnected condemned boiler

By: Robin Whitlock  On: 31-10-2012 18:07  (16278 Reads)
INDUSTRY NEWS

A Derbyshire victim of carbon monoxide poisoning reconnected his condemned boiler because his house was too cold.

Stephen Newton, 52, of Stanley Common, Derbyshire, had been informed in May 2008 by an E.ON employee that his boiler was ‘immediately dangerous’ and it was therefore disconnected. Mr Newton told his partner, Susan Davies, that he would ‘sort it out’ but the boiler was not repaired or replaced despite Mr Newton’s landlady being informed. In October 2009, some 17 months later after the visit by the E.ON employee, Mr Newton reconnected the boiler himself as the weather grew colder and in response to the gas fire ceasing to operate.
